The arbitrary arrest of journalist Arnab Goswami is a serious violation of press freedom and individual liberty.
Early Wednesday morning, a Maharashtra police team arrested and physically assaulted journalist Arnab Goswami at his Mumbai residence, with television footage showing him being pushed into a police van. Police sources said officials from the Mumbai criminal branch assisted the Alibaug police team.
This villainous act is a shameful attack on the freedom of the press.
False charges of incitement to suicide were brought against Arnab Goswami in 2018. The case was investigated by the Mumbai police and was closed by the court after a report from the police noted that no link had been made.
Union Home Secretary Amit Shah said democracy was being humiliated by Congress and its allies. "The blatant abuse of state power against Republic TV and Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the fourth pillar of democracy. It reminds us of the urgency. This attack on the free press must and will be fought. "
For Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javdekar, the arrest reminded people of "the days of emergency when the press was treated like this".
Many other Union ministers and BJP chairman JP Nadda said Goswami's arrest was an assault on press freedom.
Arnab Goswami is also engaged in a battle with the Mumbai police after his TV channel criticized them over the investigation into the Sushant Singh Rajput "suicide" case and the bogus TRP case.
This incident is not only limited to the suffocation of freedom of the press, but it constitutes an attack on the personal liberty and the liberty accorded to every citizen of the country.
