Every living being, whether human or animal, deserves the chance to live freely and with dignity. At the Alushta Aquarium, a turtle has spent over 20 years confined in a small tank a space completely unsuited to its natural needs. Seeing such a majestic, ocean-dwelling creature restricted to a cramped glass enclosure is deeply distressing.
Turtles are not meant to live this way. These intelligent, long-living animals need room to swim, to explore, and to express their natural behaviors. Keeping a turtle especially one of this size and age in such tight captivity is not only unnatural but harmful to its physical and mental health. Research has shown that prolonged confinement leads to stress, illness, and a significantly reduced life expectancy.
Imagine being trapped for two decades in a space where you can’t stretch out, swim freely, or experience the world as you were meant to. That is the daily reality for this turtle.
But there is still time to change that.
Experts in marine wildlife and animal welfare strongly support rehabilitation and sanctuary placement for animals that have lived in captivity for extended periods. Transferring this turtle to a more appropriate environment such as a marine sanctuary or rehabilitation center would give it the space, care, and dignity it so desperately needs.
This is not just about one turtle it’s about standing up for the ethical treatment of all captive animals.
We are calling on the Alushta Aquarium to take responsible action: work with marine life experts and allow this turtle a second chance at life outside the tank, in an environment where it can finally thrive.
