Dear Ministers and fellow citizens,
I write to you not as an expert, but as someone who believes deeply in kindness towards animals especially those who share our homes and our lives.
Across the UK, thousands of dogs and cats are still being fitted with electric shock collars. These devices send painful jolts through their bodies in an attempt to “correct” behaviour. But what they truly teach is fear, confusion and distress. No animal should ever learn through pain.
The Government promised to ban these collars in 2024. Yet as time passes, the suffering continues. Each day that the ban is delayed, more pets are hurt, often by people who genuinely think they’re doing the right thing, misled by outdated advice and old habits.
We now know better. Science and compassion show us that animals learn best through trust, patience and positive reinforcement. Training built on fear breaks bonds; training built on kindness strengthens them.
It’s time for the UK to live up to its reputation as a nation of animal lovers. It’s time to ban electric shock collars for good.
Because love should never hurt.
