Every year, under the guise of "tradition," the Yulin Dog Meat Festival becomes a gruesome theatre of suffering. Thousands of dogs and cats, many of them stolen pets still wearing their collars, are crammed into tiny wire cages where they can barely breathe. They are transported over long distances without food or water, only to be publicly bludgeoned, burned, or even boiled alive in the belief that adrenaline makes the meat tastier. This is not culture; it is barbaric, institutionalised torture.
Beyond the festival, the dog and cat meat trade is a global stain on humanity, involving the slaughter of millions of animals annually. It is an industry built on theft, illegality, and extreme physical agony. These animals are highly sentient, loyal, and capable of profound emotional connection; treating them as "livestock" to be butchered in the most violent ways possible is a moral atrocity. Furthermore, the trade poses a massive public health risk, significantly contributing to the spread of rabies and other deadly diseases.
We demand that the governments of all nations where this trade persists implement an immediate and permanent ban on the slaughter and consumption of dogs and cats. We call for the strict enforcement of animal cruelty laws and the shutdown of all illegal slaughterhouses. We must choose empathy over apathy. A "tradition" that relies on the screams of innocent animals has no place in the 21st century.
