The images coming out of shearing sheds around the world are a disgrace and reveal a truth that the textile industry tries to hide: wool is not a harmless byproduct; it is a product of violence.
The reality of industrial shearing is a total scandal. To maximize profit, speed is prioritised over the animal's life. Shearers are often paid by the volume of wool produced, not by the hour. This leads to extreme negligence and terrifying brutality. In the rush to go faster, sheep are kicked, punched, and pinned down with absolute violence. Their skin is frequently sliced open by sharp shears. Instead of receiving proper veterinary care, these gaping wounds are often stitched shut with a needle and thread without any anaesthesia. This is not "haircutting"; it is a bloodbath.
This incident is not about a few isolated cases; it is a systemic failure. It exposes a global industry where living, breathing animals are treated like inanimate objects. When a sheep panics or struggles, it is met with blows. The reality is that animal welfare is non-existent when productivity is the only goal. We must no longer accept that sentient beings are subjected to such terror for a sweater or a coat.
Stop viewing sheep as mere machines for wool. A sheep feels pain, fear, and distress. The shearing industry is dangerous, unregulated, and inherently cruel. Every wool product purchased contributes to this cycle of suffering.
Refuse to be complicit in this cruelty: Choose ethical, animal-free alternatives. Your voice and your purchases are the only way to stop this scandal.
