This weekend, a bull was turned into a living torch. Despite global outrage, the "Toro de Jubilo" festival took place again in Medinaceli, Spain. A terrified bull was tied to a post, covered in mud, and had balls of pitch and fireworks attached to its horns. Then, they set him on fire. For nearly an hour, the animal ran in panic, shaking its head desperately as burning embers fell into its eyes and on its skin, surrounded by a screaming crowd.
Veterinarians confirm that the immense stress causes severe muscle damage and psychological trauma, even if the animal physically survives the flames.
Your taxes are paying for this. The regional government is currently reviewing the budget for cultural festivities.
It is unacceptable that public money is used to subsidise this medieval torture under the guise of "tradition." Tradition is never an excuse for cruelty. If we stop the funding, we stop the fire.
We demand an immediate ban. We call on the Mayor of Medinaceli and the Junta de Castilla y León to completely remove the "Toro de Jubilo" from the list of protected cultural events.
Cancel the subsidies. Ban the fire. Let the bulls live in peace.
