These animals are confined in tiny, cramped cages where they cannot even turn around. To increase the production of musk, they are kept in a state of constant stress, often in high temperatures and near smoke. The extraction process is a true torture: the animals are painfully restrained while their glands are scraped with a metal tool. This violent procedure is repeated every few days, causing permanent injuries, infections, and psychological trauma. Many civets go mad from the confinement, constantly pacing or self-mutilating until they die of exhaustion or disease.
In an era where synthetic alternatives are widely available and identical in quality, there is no excuse for continuing this archaic and barbaric practice. We demand that perfume houses and cosmetic companies officially commit to removing natural civet musk from their formulas and transition to 100% cruelty-free ingredients.
