News of American raccoons evolving to look "cuter" due to their proximity to urban life and their subsequent rise as TikTok celebrities and exotic pets rings loud alarm bells for animal welfare globally, and especially here in the UK. This dangerous trend is a fantasy fueled by ignorance and online views, sacrificing the well-being of complex, wild animals for profit and social media fame.
Raccoons, often affectionately called 'trash pandas,' are highly intelligent, high-maintenance wild animals. They are simply not suited for life confined in a living room, regardless of how 'cute' their snout might become. When wild animals are kept as pets, they endure immense physical and psychological distress. Wild instincts cannot be simply bred out overnight, and confining a wide-roaming, nocturnal animal to a domestic setting causes chronic stress, behavioural problems, and severe, unnecessary suffering.
The visibility of exotic pets on platforms like TikTok and Instagram creates a highly damaging, artificial demand. It dangerously normalizes the exotic pet trade, encouraging reckless buyers to seek out these animals without regard for their complex needs, their legal status, or their suitability for domestic life. We must also remember the real risks to public health and safety from zoonotic diseases, a fact often ignored in the desperate pursuit of online visibility. The UK has laws regulating exotic pet ownership, but they are clearly inadequate and poorly enforced against the rapid, global spread of online promotion. We must act now before this dangerous trend takes firm root here.
We, the undersigned, demand immediate and decisive action from the UK Government and Social Media Platforms to safeguard wild animals from this exploitation.
Defra must introduce a comprehensive ban on the private ownership of raccoons and other non-domesticated species including primates, coatis, and certain reptiles where clear evidence shows they cannot possibly thrive in a domestic environment. The Animals Act and Dangerous Wild Animals Act are simply insufficient to cover this evolving technological threat to animal welfare.
Social media platforms must also face accountability. They must implement and strictly enforce a zero-tolerance policy against all content promoting the private ownership, trade, or interaction with non-domesticated wild animals that are clearly unsuitable as pets. This includes immediately removing videos that glorify raccoons and other exotic species as 'fun pets.'
Finally, we demand enhanced enforcement and education. The government must invest increased funding into local authorities and the RSPCA to enforce existing exotic animal laws, alongside a powerful public education campaign highlighting the inevitable suffering caused by the wild pet trade.
The fleeting joy of a viral video is never worth a lifetime of misery for a complex, wild animal. We must stop treating wildlife as mere commodities or sources of online entertainment.
