There, I discovered with horror and anger, that even today, a handful of men are leaving Ness for the island of Sula Sgeir with the objective of capturing 2,000 gannet chicks (called guga) to kill them, pluck them, salt them and transform them into so-called culinary treasure!!
For two weeks, these young birds, still defenseless and unable to fly, are massacred in the name of an archaic, barbaric and bloody tradition.
The images of their bodies piled up in the open air haunt me. How can we, in 2025, tolerate such scenes??
The most unbearable thing is to know that this practice benefits from a scandalous derogation enshrined in the 1954 law on the protection of birds. A law supposed to protect wildlife has opened a legal loophole to authorize an annual massacre, turning a protected species into “luxury” delicacies for a select few
.I am rebellious.
Guga is not a necessary food, it is a symbol of cruelty inherited from another time. At a time when biodiversity is collapsing, where the colonies of gannets are already weakened by climate change, how can we still sacrifice 2,000 gugas each year on
the altar of tradition?I want the immediate repeal of the 1954 derogation and the definitive ban on the hunting of gannets on Sula Sgeir!!
We no longer have the right to close our eyes!
Wildlife is paying the price for these deadly traditions, and it is our duty to put an end to them.
This massacre is unacceptable!!
