Every year, tens of millions of sharks are killed for one single reason: their fins. This practice, known as shark finning, is one of the most wasteful and cruel acts in the fishing industry. It is driving predators that have existed for millions of years to the brink of extinction.
the horror of the process :
A living waste : Sharks are caught and hauled onto boats. Their fins are sliced off while the animal is still alive. Because shark meat is worth very little compared to the fins the rest of the body is simply thrown back into the ocean.
A slow death : Without its fins a shark cannot swim to pass water through its gills. The animal sinks to the bottom of the ocean, unable to breathe or move. It dies slowly from suffocation, blood loss, or is eaten alive by other predators while still conscious.
The collapse of the oceans : Sharks are apex predators. They keep the marine ecosystem in balance. Removing them causes a catastrophic chain reaction that destroys fish populations and coral reefs. By killing sharks for a soup we are killing our oceans.
Finning is banned in many waters but the illegal trade continues to thrive for luxury markets. We demand a global ban on the possession, sale, and trade of shark fins and stricter enforcement of international waters.
