We are outraged by the shocking revelations in this investigation: The Guardian – Shops advise customers how to illegally use glue traps. Across England, hardware stores are selling glue traps to the public and even instructing customers on how to drown or abandon animals alive caught on these devices.
Glue traps are extremely cruel. Mice, rats, birds, cats, hedgehogs, and even foxes can become trapped for hours or days, struggling in horrific pain, sometimes biting off their own limbs or dying from starvation, dehydration, or suffocation. Pet cat Miles and a baby fox in Edinburgh are heartbreaking examples of innocent animals suffering and dying because of these traps.
Using glue traps without a proper licence has been illegal for over a year in the UK. Yet, hundreds of stores continue to sell them to the public, ignoring the law and putting animals at unnecessary risk. Shockingly, some shop assistants openly suggest illegal ways to kill trapped animals, actions that constitute criminal offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
This loophole undermines professional pest control licensing and allows innocent animals to suffer for human convenience. Humane World for Animals UK, the charity behind the investigation, estimates that more than 1,200 independent stores in England still sell these traps.
We demand that the UK government ban the sale of glue traps to the public immediately, close the loophole, and enforce strict penalties for anyone selling or instructing the use of these cruel devices. No animal should suffer such a slow, agonizing death for the sake of convenience or profit.
