Many people believe that declawing a cat is just a permanent nail trim. This is a dangerous lie. Declawing is not a minor procedure. It is a major surgical mutilation that would be illegal if performed on humans.
To declaw a cat the veterinarian must amputate the last bone of each toe. This is equivalent to cutting off a human finger at the last knuckle. Because cats walk on their toes this surgery changes their entire posture. It leads to chronic back pain and lifelong lameness. Imagine being forced to walk on amputated stumps every single day.
A cat’s claws are its primary defence and its natural way of stretching. Without them cats often become extremely anxious and aggressive. They often start biting because they no longer have their natural protection.
Scratching is a natural behaviour and there is no medical reason to mutilate an animal to protect furniture. Scratching posts and regular nail trims are the only humane solutions. Declawing is already banned in many countries but it remains legal in many parts of the USA. It is time to treat this practice for what it is: animal cruelty. We demand a total ban on all non-medical declawing.
