Every five years, the Bariyarpur district in Nepal becomes the site of the world's largest animal sacrifice during the Gadhimai festival. Hundreds of thousands of sentient beings—including buffaloes, goats, pigs, pigeons, and rats—are slaughtered in conditions of indescribable barbarity. These animals are transported over long distances without food or water, only to end up huddling in death pens where they wait for their execution under a scorching sun.
The horror reaches its peak during the killing: thousands of individuals, often with no slaughtering experience, use blunt "kukri" knives. It frequently takes multiple brutal attempts to decapitate a single animal, prolonging an agonising death in full view of other terrified creatures. Despite past promises from temple authorities to end the sacrifices and a 2016 Nepal Supreme Court ruling, the blood continues to flow. This massive bloodbath is not a spiritual tradition, but a blatant violation of the fundamental rights of animals to be free from unnecessary torture.
We call upon the Nepalese government to strictly enforce the ban on animal sacrifices and to transform this festival into a celebration of life rather than death. We demand that criminal sanctions be taken against organisers who ignore the law and that peaceful, alternative methods of devotion be encouraged. It is time to end this medieval spectacle and make room for compassion.
Sign this petition to demand a definitive end to this massacre and protect animals from this nameless cruelty.
