The UK banned the production of foie gras decades ago, rightly labelling the process as "unacceptably cruel". Yet, every year, the UK continues to import approximately 200 tonnes of this product from countries where animals are still subjected to extreme suffering.
The reality of foie gras production is a nightmare for ducks and geese. They are subjected to "gavage"—the forced feeding of massive amounts of grain through a metal tube several times a day. This causes their livers to swell to ten times their natural size, resulting in severe organ failure, breathing difficulties, and constant pain.
It is a moral contradiction to ban a practice on home soil while allowing it to be funded through international trade. In March 2026, over 315,000 people delivered a petition to 10 Downing Street demanding an end to this double standard.
We demand:
The UK Parliament must immediately pass a complete ban on the import and sale of force-fed foie gras.
The government must uphold its commitment to being a world leader in animal welfare by closing this legal loophole.
Sign this petition to tell the government that cruelty should not be imported. #BanFoieGras
