We are deeply concerned about the UK government’s plan to increase the target of badger culls to 100% in certain areas, a move that could lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths among these intelligent and social animals. More details here: The Independent – Proposal to raise badger cull target numbers.
Since 2013, over 260,000 badgers have been killed under the culling program intended to control bovine tuberculosis in cattle. Yet scientific evidence shows that cattle are far more likely to spread the disease than badgers. The policy has already been expanded multiple times, and now the government is considering turning “exceptional” circumstances into a routine justification for mass killing.
Experts warn that moving to a 100% cull target could result in tens of thousands of badgers being killed every year, especially in medium-risk areas. This not only causes immense suffering for the animals, but it also fails to address the root causes of disease transmission, making the cull both cruel and ineffective.
Badgers are highly intelligent, social creatures with complex family groups. The expansion of culling threatens not only individual animals, but entire badger communities and ecosystems. Vaccination programs have proven to be a humane and effective alternative, yet the government continues to prioritize lethal measures.
We call on the UK government to halt the expansion of badger culling immediately and invest in widespread vaccination and non-lethal disease control. No animal should suffer needlessly while science and compassion offer better solutions.
