Every year, millions of chickens in the UK are transported from farms to slaughterhouses in terrifying, painful conditions. And now, following a recent legal shift, UK regulations once again allow chickens to be carried upside-down by their legs — a deeply inhumane practice.
This handling method causes serious pain, injuries, and stress to the animals. Their legs are not designed to support the weight of their bodies in this way. Scientific studies and animal welfare experts have long warned that such treatment leads to fractures, dislocations, and severe distress.
We strongly condemn this backward step in animal welfare policy. Instead of improving conditions for animals in farming, we are normalising cruelty for the sake of convenience and profit.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to immediately reinstate the ban on this cruel handling method.
The UK Government to adopt strict, enforceable standards for humane handling of all farm animals during transport.
Retailers and poultry producers to commit to higher welfare supply chains, where chickens are handled gently and with care.
The UK claims to have some of the strongest animal welfare laws in the world. Let’s live up to that claim.
