The recent discovery of a "bushmeat" slaughterhouse in the heart of London is a wake-up call that we can no longer ignore. On December 5th, 2025, authorities in Deptford seized 38kg of illegal frozen meat, including critically endangered pangolins, cane rats, and porcupines.
This is not just a local crime; it is a global scandal. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world, with over one million poached in a single decade. Every commercial trade of this species is strictly prohibited internationally, yet they continue to be slaughtered for their scales and meat based on unscientific myths about traditional medicine.
The danger of this trade is twofold: First, it is an ecological disaster. The illegal trade of nearly 30,000 live animals and tons of meat—including giraffe, zebra, and antelope—is destabilising food chains and pushing species toward extinction. Second, it is a major biosecurity threat. This meat bypasses all safety checks and can introduce invasive diseases or viruses, posing a serious risk of a new global pandemic.
Criminal networks are generating an estimated $20 billion annually from wildlife crime, intersecting with drug trafficking and human exploitation. We must demand that the Metropolitan Police and international authorities treat wildlife trafficking with the same severity as high-level organised crime.
We must stop treating endangered animals as luxury food or ingredients for fake medicine. Wildlife trafficking is a crime against nature and a danger to humanity. Every illegally imported product fuels a network of violence and extinction.
Refuse to stay silent: Demand stricter border controls and maximum penalties for those involved in this trade. Your voice is the only way to protect our planet’s biodiversity.
