In the UK and the US, thousands of gentle, trusting beagles are being bred in secretive facilities, not for companionship but for a lifetime of suffering in laboratories.
These dogs are born not into homes, but into factory-like breeding farms, where their only purpose is to be used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic testing. Once their bodies have been pushed to the limit, they’re often killed and discarded, treated as nothing more than disposable lab equipment.
Beagles are specifically chosen for this abuse because of their docile nature, making them easier to control and less likely to resist but that same gentle personality is why they deserve protection, not pain.
In both the United Kingdom and the United States, this form of cruelty is still fully legal. Every year, tens of thousands of dogs many of them beagles are subjected to toxicity tests, force-fed chemicals, and made to endure experiments that can cause intense suffering, mental distress, and a painful death.
These tests are often carried out in complete secrecy, with limited public oversight or accountability. In 2022 alone, over 60,000 dogs were used in experiments in the US, with even more bred and held in hidden facilities. Many never see daylight, feel grass, or know a kind human touch.
There Is a Better Way
Thanks to major advancements in science and technology, non-animal testing methods now exist that are more accurate, ethical, and cost-effective. Yet companies continue to cling to outdated practices that cause immense suffering all in the name of profit.
Some countries, like Belgium, have already banned the breeding of dogs for testing. It’s time for the UK and the USA to follow suit and end this shameful practice.
We call on lawmakers in the United Kingdom and the United States to:
Ban the breeding of beagles for laboratory use
Shut down factory farms that supply dogs to testing labs
Invest in and prioritize animal-free research methods
Ensure transparency and stricter regulations for existing testing practices
Beagles are not products. They are loving, intelligent, emotional beings who deserve a life of freedom, safety, and compassion not confinement and cruelty.
