The petition
Tigers, bears, elephants and wild boars are dying of hunger and disease in the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia.
The last giraffe died with 20 kg of plastic found in his stomach. Due to a lack of food, it ate what the tourists gave. In another incident, a Java warthog was found with cyanide in its stomach.
Sixteen tigers are confined in cells aligned like in a prison corridor, and wild beasts must take turns in stretching their legs. Some never go out like a white tiger, given to the zoo 20 years ago by the Indian government and who suffers from skin lesions. They no longer have the strength to stand up due to lack of exercise.
Some staff stole Komodo dragons (a threatened and protected species) to sell on the black market. These animals live a hell, they need you, write to the Indonesian Embassy in the UK or the Indonesian government asking them to do something for these abused animals, and sign this petition!
A new drama at Surabaya Zoo took place on Thursday: a young lion, a year and a half old, was found dead hanging in its cage. His head was stuck on the ropes which guards use to open and close the doors. On Tuesday a wildebeest was found dead. Zoo officials give a meaningless explanation: "intestinal complications following several days of heavy rain."
For associations defending animals, the death of the wildebeest come from malnutrition. In May 2012 a visibly hungry tiger was photographed by Michael Bachelard, an Australian journalist.
A report submitted to the Indonesian authorities by an independent team recommends the placement of animals in other zoos in the country. But zoos refuse to welcome residents because of their poor state and fear that they may transmit diseases to other animals.
We urge the Indonesian government to properly feed and treat these animals and to provide adequate living space for each species and hire competent staff.
Thank you for them.
