Every spring, the ice floes off the coast of Newfoundland turn red with blood. The commercial seal hunt is about to begin, and thousands of defenceless animals will lose their lives for the fashion industry.
The Reality of the Hunt:
Targeting Babies: Approximately 97% of the seals killed in the commercial hunt are pups less than three months old. They have often just eaten their first solid meal.
Cruel Methods: Hunters use high-powered rifles or wooden clubs with metal spikes (hakapiks) to crush the animals' skulls.
Waste of Life: Major global markets, including the European Union and the USA, have already banned seal products. Yet, the Canadian government continues to subsidise this dying industry with taxpayer money.
This is not about survival or subsistence; it is a commercial massacre for fur that nobody wants. We cannot let the ice turn red again this year. We demand an immediate end to the commercial seal hunt.
