In several countries children as young as 9 or 10 years old are enrolled in bullfighting schools. They are not taught a sport; they are taught to use weapons to inflict suffering on calves and young bulls. This practice is a double tragedy: it normalises violence in minors and tortures young animals.
the reality of these "schools" :
The learning of slaughter : Students first practice on wooden carts and then quickly move to live calves. These animals which are only a few months old are stabbed repeatedly by children who have not yet mastered the gestures. The animal’s agony is often long and horrific because the killing blow is rarely precise.
Psychological impact on minors : The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has already warned about the danger of these schools. Exposing children to such violence and teaching them that pleasure can be linked to the suffering of a living being is a trauma that can damage their empathy and emotional development.
A tradition against progress : In a modern society it is unacceptable to use public money to fund centres where minors are taught to kill. Violence should never be a subject of study or a hobby for youth.
We demand an immediate ban on minors' access to bullfighting schools and an end to all child participation in bullfighting events.
