It’s astounding. Nearly 2,000 deer are set to be killed on Santa Catalina Island, California.
The mule deer of Santa Catalina Island were introduced in the 1920s for the pleasure of hunting. It is Man who made the mistake of introducing this species to the island and, as usual, he is correcting his mistake with violence...
Today, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife wants to exterminate all the deer on the island, about 2000 animals, under the pretext of “ecological restoration.” Snipers, equipped with drones, dogs, and even helicopters, are planned to track and shoot these animals.
Santa Catalina is not just a piece of land; it is a jewel of the Pacific, home to more than 60 endemic species, such as the Catalina Island fox, the Catalina ground squirrel, or the Catalina ornate shrew.
Its unique biodiversity is protected by the Catalina Island Conservancy, which manages 88% of the territory and conducts programs to preserve its wildlife.
Yes, I understand that the island deserves to be protected but mass culling is not a solution.
Other methods exist, sterilisation, contraception, relocation… It is cruel and unnecessary to resort to a near-military operation with rifles, drones, and helicopters to kill these animals.
This decision is immoral; the deer have done nothing wrong, they are just paying the price for human errors!!!
I urge the authorities and the Catalina Island Conservancy to stop this culling plan.
Sign to say no to this massacre and to protect the deer of Santa Catalina!
