As awareness grows about the intelligence, emotional capacity, and complex behaviors of octopuses, the idea of farming them in captivity for human consumption is not only deeply unethical but environmentally irresponsible.
Despite these concerns, proposals to create commercial octopus farms are moving forward — particularly in Europe and beyond — with devastating implications for animal welfare and marine ecosystems.
We, the undersigned, call for an immediate ban on the development and implementation of octopus farming.
Sentient, Intelligent Beings
Octopuses are highly intelligent, solitary animals who require complex, stimulating environments. Studies have shown that they can feel pain, experience stress, and display problem-solving behaviors. Farming them in small, barren tanks would lead to extreme psychological suffering.
Impossible to Farm Humanely
Because octopuses are solitary and territorial, confining them in shared spaces leads to aggression, cannibalism, and chronic stress. There is no humane way to farm these animals on a large scale.
Environmental Cost
Octopus farming is highly unsustainable. As carnivores, farmed octopuses require large quantities of wild-caught fish as feed, contributing to overfishing and depletion of marine ecosystems — the very ones they belong to.
No Regulation, No Transparency
There are currently no clear international standards or regulations for octopus farming. Allowing the industry to move forward without strict oversight sets a dangerous precedent for future exploitation of marine life.
Public Opposition
Animal welfare groups, marine biologists, and environmental activists around the world — including many in the UK — have voiced strong opposition to octopus farming, calling it unethical and ecologically damaging.
We urge the UK Government and international authorities to:
Ban the import, production, and promotion of farmed octopus and octopus farming technologies.
Fund and support marine conservation efforts that prioritize protection, not exploitation.
Encourage plant-based and lab-grown alternatives that do not harm intelligent, sentient marine life.
Collaborate with international partners to create strong legal protections for cephalopods in all settings — wild or captive.
Educate the public about the ethical and environmental issues surrounding octopus farming.
Farming octopuses is not a necessity — it is a step backward in our treatment of animals. It represents the industrialization of yet another sentient being, pushed into suffering for profit.
Let the UK lead the way by rejecting this cruel practice, and help set a global precedent that intelligence, sentience, and the right to freedom matter — no matter the species.
Sign this petition and stand up for ocean life. Because intelligence deserves protection — not exploitation.
