Each year, the UK shooting industry breeds and releases approximately 60 million birds including pheasants and partridges solely for the purpose of shooting them for sport. These birds come from large-scale commercial farms where they are kept in cramped, unnatural conditions, deprived of the chance to behave naturally and often subjected to suffering and stress.
This cruel industry is a collision between factory farming and blood sports, causing severe animal welfare concerns while also damaging the environment and native wildlife.
Animal Welfare: Birds bred for shooting are raised in overcrowded and barren conditions, leading to disease, injuries, and psychological distress. They are often kept in large sheds with little to no access to natural outdoor spaces before being released.
Environmental Impact: The release of millions of non-native game birds disrupts fragile ecosystems. These birds compete with native species for food, shelter, and breeding sites, upsetting the balance of local wildlife populations.
Predator Control: Animals such as foxes, badgers, and birds of prey, labeled as “pests” by the shooting industry, are frequently trapped, poisoned, or killed to protect the interests of gamekeepers.
Cruel Deaths: Many birds do not die instantly when shot but suffer agonizing, slow deaths after being wounded and left to linger.
Disease Risks: The mass release of captive-bred birds increases the risk of spreading diseases like avian flu, threatening wild bird populations and biodiversity.
Ethical Concerns: Killing sentient animals purely for recreational shooting is increasingly seen as morally indefensible in a modern, compassionate society.
Ban the breeding and release of game birds for shooting purposes.
Prohibit the shooting of any birds bred solely for sport.
Increase funding and support for habitat restoration and native species conservation.
Introduce strict regulations to protect wild predators from illegal persecution.
Promote and support alternative, sustainable outdoor activities that respect animal welfare and biodiversity.
The shooting industry’s mass breeding and release of birds is not just an animal welfare crisis but an environmental one, too. Native wildlife is losing vital resources, and ecosystems are being destabilized. The birds themselves endure lives of suffering, only to face cruel deaths.
This outdated practice belongs in the past. We have a responsibility to protect animals, respect nature, and promote ethical outdoor recreation.
By signing this petition, you are calling on the UK government to put an end to this harmful and unnecessary practice. Together, we can safeguard animal welfare, protect native wildlife, and build a more ethical future.
Sign now to demand a ban on the breeding, release, and shooting of game birds for sport in the UK!
