On April 9, 2023, when most of us were celebrating Easter, Diane Gouhier, president of the Coeur sur Pattes association, had to urgently intervene in the face of an unbearable case of animal abuse.
A dog named Riya was found in a trash can, in a state of extreme dehydration, anaemia, and suffering from serious internal injuries. His organs were in the open and partly necrotic. Its owner did not even notice his disappearance.
Faced with this situation, Diane had no choice but to act:
But instead of legal support for this exemplary rescue, Diane found herself unfairly prosecuted. The prosecutor ordered Riya to be returned to its original owner, a misunderstood choice for anyone who advocates for animal welfare. Recognizing that sending Riya back to an environment deemed unsuitable was likely to worsen her condition and was tantamount to condemning her to death, Diane refused to comply with this decision. In response, she was taken into custody for 24 hours and is now facing a trial for “dog theft”, scheduled for March 31, 2025.
If the facts are confirmed, we ask for justice for Riya and for Diane Gouhier:
We call for animal defenders not to be prosecuted when they act in good faith, and for responsibilities to be established fairly.
Together, let's make our voices heard for justice to be done and for animal protectors to no longer be criminalized.
