On February 4, 2026, a video of absolute horror shook Tunisia, coming from the governorate of Monastir. Three men committed acts of extreme cruelty on a defenceless puppy: the animal was locked in a bag, its snout blocked by a metal cable, before being coldly slaughtered. These scenes of torture were filmed by a fourth accomplice and then shared on social media, causing deep shock and national outrage.
This barbaric act is not an isolated incident but a sign of a worrying increase in cases of abuse in Tunisia. As lawyer Elyes Jilani points out, the dissemination of such images constitutes a true “psychological terrorism” that attacks social order. Although Tunisian legislation provides for penalties of up to five years in prison, the lack of systematic and deterrent legal responses allows such excesses to continue.
We demand that the Tunisian Ministry of Justice impose the maximum prison sentence against the four individuals involved. We also call for judicial reform to strengthen animal protection and for the integration of animal empathy education programs in schools. Cruelty towards animals is a reflection of deeper social violence that can no longer be ignored. Justice must be served for the puppy from Monastir.
