In December 2024, a home in Milford Haven was revealed to be a "house of horrors" where 52 animals were found living in extreme filth. RSPCA inspectors were hit by an overpowering stench of waste as they discovered 29 dogs, 17 snakes, a tortoise, and several exotic lizards trapped in rooms covered in piles of faeces and urine.
The suffering was absolute. Animals were forced to sleep on their own food just to find a dry spot. Investigators found dead animals in sheds and a freezer, including a dog that had suffered "extreme pain" from a rectal tear before dying. Snakes were found so emaciated that their spines were easily visible, while a tortoise and gecko were trapped together without water or enrichment.
While the perpetrators were jailed, the current system fails to prevent these hoarding "breeding" operations from starting in the first place. We demand that the Australian Government implements a mandatory "animal welfare flag" system for local councils to track and investigate individuals breeding multiple species without a licence. We also call for life-long bans on animal ownership to be the mandatory minimum for cases involving mass neglect and death. No animal should ever be forced to live in a "house of filth" again.
