As Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a disturbing campaign of violence against its street dog population is escalating. Instead of implementing humane and sustainable animal control methods, authorities are resorting to mass killings, violating both ethical standards and international animal welfare guidelines. Reports indicate that thousands of innocent dogs are being shot with rifles in the streets or cruelly poisoned with strychnine, a substance that inflicts a prolonged and excruciating death, causing paralysis, spasms, and agonizing pain for hours. This "cleanup" operation is driven by a misguided effort to present a "clean" image to the world, ignoring the profound suffering inflicted upon sentient beings.
This horrific practice is not only inhumane but also utterly ineffective in the long term for managing stray populations. Humane alternatives such as Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs have been scientifically proven to stabilize and reduce stray populations over time, while also improving public health through vaccination against rabies. Morocco has a moral obligation to protect its animals, and as a global sporting body, FIFA has a responsibility to ensure that host nations uphold fundamental ethical principles.
We demand that FIFA takes immediate and decisive action. We call on FIFA to disqualify Morocco as a host nation for the 2030 World Cup if these atrocities continue, or at the very least, to exert immense and urgent pressure on the Moroccan government to immediately cease all brutal killing campaigns. Instead, FIFA must insist on the implementation of comprehensive, humane, and sustainable TNVR programs across all host cities. The spirit of sport should not be built on the blood of innocent animals.
