This week marks the beginning of a nightmare for thousands of dogs. On February 1st, the hunting season in Spain officially ended.
For most dogs, this means rest. But for the Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds) used by hunters, it means they are now "useless mouths to feed." Right now, as you read this, thousands of these elegant dogs are being abandoned in forests, thrown down deep wells, or tied to train tracks.
Shelters are currently overwhelmed by the influx of injured animals arriving in waves since Sunday.
The law is failing them. Spain recently passed a new Animal Welfare Law, but thanks to pressure from the hunting lobby, hunting dogs were specifically excluded from protection.
This legal loophole allows hunters to treat these living beings like disposable tools without facing the same criminal penalties as pet owners. This is state-sanctioned cruelty.
We need to close the loophole. We are calling on the Spanish Government to amend the Animal Welfare Law immediately.
A dog is a dog, whether it sleeps on a sofa or runs in a field. Exclude the hunting lobby, not the dogs. We demand equal protection for Galgos and harsh prison sentences for those discarding them like rubbish this month.
