Every single year, an estimated 7 billion newborn male chicks are slaughtered just hours after hatching. In the egg industry, male chicks are considered "waste products" because they cannot lay eggs and do not grow large enough to be sold for meat. Their life begins and ends on a conveyor belt. In a display of industrial efficiency stripped of all humanity, these tiny, sentient beings are shredded alive in high-speed grinders (macerators) or suffocated in plastic bags.
This is the hidden cost of the eggs on our tables. While some countries have begun to ban this horror, most of the world continues to treat living, breathing creatures as industrial trash. Furthermore, the mothers of these chicks the laying hens spend their lives in a state of permanent exhaustion and confinement, their bodies pushed to the breaking point to produce nearly 300 eggs a year, ten times the natural rate. When their productivity drops, they are discarded with the same cold indifference.
We demand that governments and the global food industry mandate the use of in-ovo sexing technology, which allows the sex of the embryo to be determined before it even develops a nervous system. We call for an immediate global ban on the maceration and gassing of chicks. We must transition to a food system that respects life from its very beginning. A newborn life is not a waste product, and efficiency is no excuse for mass murder.
