January 1st, 2026 was supposed to be a day of celebration. On that date, the historic law banning bear bile farming in South Korea officially came into full effect.
But for nearly 200 bears, the nightmare hasn't ended—it has just become more dangerous. Reports confirm that angry farmers, dissatisfied with government compensation offers, are refusing to hand over their remaining animals to sanctuaries.
These bears are now in a life-or-death limbo.
They are sitting in rusting cages, no longer profitable to their owners, which puts them at extreme risk of starvation, neglect, or "retaliatory slaughter" before authorities can intervene.
A ban on paper means nothing if the cages remain locked. The South Korean government has done the hard work of passing the law; now they must not fail at the finish line.
This is a rescue mission. We urge the Ministry of Environment to take
immediate emergency action. Do not negotiate endlessly while animals suffer. We demand that the government deploy emergency funds to secure these bears immediately and forcibly transfer them to the newly built sanctuaries.
The world is watching to see if South Korea keeps its promise.
