Millions of people use Botox injections to look younger, but few know the terrible price paid by animals for every single batch produced. Before these products reach the clinic, they are tested using the cruel and outdated LD50 (Lethal Dose 50%) method.
The process is a nightmare. Groups of mice are injected directly into their abdomens with the toxin. Then, the technicians simply wait. The animals slowly suffer from progressive paralysis. As the poison takes effect, they lose the ability to move, to eat, and finally, to breathe.
They die of slow suffocation while fully conscious. This agony can last for up to three or four days.
This torture is completely unnecessary. Valid non-animal alternatives (cell-based assays) already exist and are approved by major regulators. Yet, many companies continue to use mice because it is cheaper or they refuse to change their old habits. We demand that health authorities worldwide ban the LD50 test for cosmetic toxins immediately. No animal should suffocate to death for a beauty product.
