Across the globe, a silent and brutal crisis is wiping out donkey populations at an alarming rate. Millions of donkeys are being slaughtered every year to produce "ejiao," a gelatin made from boiling their skins, primarily used in luxury cosmetics and traditional medicine. This trade is built on unimaginable animal suffering and is devastating the lives of the world's most vulnerable communities who rely on these animals for survival.
The cruelty of this trade is absolute. Donkeys are often stolen from families who depend on them, then crammed into trucks for days without food, water, or rest. Because the industry only values the skin, the animals are treated with total indifference; they are often bludgeoned to death or even skinned alive in unregulated slaughterhouses. This is not a necessity; it is a luxury-driven massacre for a product that has no proven medicinal value and for which many plant-based or synthetic alternatives exist.
We demand that the international community implement a global ban on the export of donkey skins. We call on national governments to protect their donkey populations from the illegal trade and to shut down all ejiao processing facilities. We must recognise that these sentient, hardworking animals deserve protection, not to be liquidated for a cosmetic fad.
