For several months, the Beauval ZooParc has been presenting a project for a "temporary reception centre" for dolphins, announced as a place without breeding, without shows, and without exportation. This discourse was meant to be reassuring: a transitional and ethical solution to accommodate cetaceans in difficulty.
But the reality that is unfolding today is quite different.
This project is not a refuge, it is the creation of a new dolphinarium.
The elements revealed recently clearly show that Beauval plans to:
Breed in captivity,
Transfer dolphins to other parks, including for commercial purposes,
No commitment to sanctuaries or truly animal welfare-respecting solutions.
The park's director has stated it bluntly:
“I will not create a retirement home for dolphins.”
This statement confirms that the project's goal is the exploitation of animals, not their protection.
Yet, France has committed to turning the page on the captivity of cetaceans for entertainment purposes, with the law of 30 November 2021 (law n°2021-1539), which notably prohibits the breeding of dolphins in captivity.
This project goes against the spirit of this law and the necessary evolution of our society towards greater respect for living beings.
The immediate halt of this dolphinarium project at Beauval;
The full respect of the law prohibiting the breeding of cetaceans in captivity;
The establishment of ethical alternative solutions, including support for marine refuges and sanctuaries.
