Every year, thousands of elephants are held captive across Asia to entertain tourists. To make a wild elephant submissive enough to carry humans or perform tricks, it must undergo a horrific process known as "Phajaan" or "The Crush."Baby elephants are torn from their mothers, bound in small wooden crates, starved, and beaten with bullhooks until their spirit is completely broken. This is the hidden, bloody reality behind every elephant ride and circus performance.
The torture does not end after the training. Captive elephants spend their lives in heavy chains on hard concrete floors, leading to painful foot infections and permanent joint damage. These highly social and migratory animals are denied any natural behaviour, causing them to descend into severe psychological distress, often seen as repetitive swaying. When they are not working, they are frequently isolated in sterile environments, deprived of the complex family bonds that are vital to their survival.
We demand that the tourism industry and national governments ban elephant rides and performances immediately. We call for a transition toward genuine "observation-only" sanctuaries where elephants can live without human contact or exploitation. We must stop treating these majestic, endangered beings as photo props. A moment of entertainment for a tourist is not worth a lifetime of agony for an elephant.
