A truck carrying 500 terrified cats has been intercepted, but their nightmare is not over.
Police in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam, stopped a vehicle this week packed with cages of cats destined for the meat trade and "bone glue" industry. Many of these animals are wearing collars—they are stolen family pets snatched from the streets.
They are currently in immediate danger of execution. Under local regulations regarding "smuggled goods" without health papers, intercepted animals are often considered a bio-hazard and are buried alive or crushed ("destroyed") rather than saved.
This tragedy happened previously with thousands of cats; we cannot let it happen again. Local rescue groups are standing by, ready to take them.
We demand a compassionate release. We urge the Dong Thap authorities to grant immediate custody of these 500 cats to animal welfare organisations. Do not treat victims like trash.
Release them to the shelters that are fighting to save them.
